Green Chalk Contemporary: Sharron Antholt Exhibition, "India"

This event has already passed

Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey's Lighthouse District is proud to present an exhibition by artist Sharron Antholt entitled India, September 17 - November 30.

The entire community is welcome to join us for the opening reception celebrating our simultaneous exhibits of work by Sharron Antholt and Rob Bernard on Saturday, September 20, 6pm-8pm.

Sharron Antholt references architectural and sculptural shapes from India in her new work, particularly from her recent stay in Tamil Nadu, in South India in 2013. By reducing images of fortresses, temples, and sculptural forms to flat shapes, Antholt attempts to find the essence of these forms. It becomes like a map, which in its flattened state allows us to grasp something too large to comprehend. In these new works on paper and canvas, Antholt refers to what she calls "a feeling of condensed or collapsed time which powerfully permeates everyday life in India; the sensation of thousands of years existing in a single moment."

Exhibitions of Antholt's work include those in the Washington, D.C. area at The Corcoran Gallery, Washington Project for the Arts, Franz Bader Gallery, Anton Gallery, Maryland Art Place, and the McLean Project for the Arts. International exhibition venues include the Indian International Center in New Delhi, Chemould Gallery in Calcutta, and the Tretykov Gallery in Moscow. She has also received fellowship residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts.

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 2pm-7pm and by appointment. For more information, please phone Ami-Sue Lawless at 831-601-0534.
