HER Helmet Thursdays Comes to the Lighthouse District!
Bike to the Lighthouse District on Thursdays and receive discounts from local businesses participating in HER Helmet Thursdays! Six Lighthouse District businesses - Amir's Kabob House, Henry's BBQ Restaurant, Hula's Island Grill & Tiki Room, International Market & Deli, Monterey Hostel, and Persian Grill, and Taqueria Del Mar - are among the first participants in HER Helmet Thursdays, a countywide sustainability project.

The project is an ecology-economy partnership. H-E-R businesses and organizations help sustain the environment by offering customers a 10 to 50 percent discount for biking there on Thursdays. And they help sustain the economy by taking a step to make Monterey County one of the most bicycling friendly tourist destinations in the country! In turn, cyclists not only partner in sustaining the environment, they also help sustain the economy by patronizing these businesses and organizations.

What does H-E-R refer to? Hotels (and other lodging), Educational attractions and entertainment venues, and Restaurants (and other dining, i.e., coffee shops and sit-down delis).

How do cyclists get a discount? At educational attractions, entertainment venues, and restaurants, a cyclist walks in with their bicycle helmet in hand and mentions "HER Helmet Thursdays" for a discount off their total tab (alcohol may be excluded).

At hotels, a cyclist gets a discount on their Thursday night stay by bringing their own bicycle or by renting a bike for a day or longer from any Monterey County rental shop. With rentals, a cyclist provides a copy of their rental agreement or receipt.

Local Mari Lynch Dehmler has launched HER Helmet Thursdays in Monterey County as a community service, and charter participants pay no fee to participate. If you have a business or organization that would like to participate, please phone Mari at 831-375-6278.

For details and a complete list of participants, please visit the Bicycling Monterey website.

Thank you Mari and all the participating businesses in the HER Helmet Thursdays program. It's so refreshing to see true grass roots effort making a difference in the community. This is how things are done!

This is such a great idea - Thursdays is a wonderful place to start though I'd love to see this same supportive opportunity everyday of the week! I think it would encourage even more cycling. We all need as much support as possible to keep our bodies moving and to cut down on fossil consumption! Thanks Mari for your continued commitment to truly being a participant in your community!

Renee, your idea was picked up on by one of the newest charter participants in HER Helmet Thursdays, The Spa at Bernardus Lodge. The Spa is offering their discount to cyclists seven days a week! Check out their details in the "E" category listings at http://www.bicyclingmonterey.com
