Silent Auction Fundraiser at Ma's Green Living, January 25-30

Posted on January 25th, 2016 by lighthouseave

Ma's Green Living is hosting a silent auction from Monday, January 25 through Saturday, January 30 to raise funds to help cover medical and living expenses for Phil Hellyer, a member of the Ma's family. We have some wonderful art pieces as well as crystals and jewelry - come on down during business hours and make a bid!

Phil Hellyer is the owner and sole employee of Phil's Auto Repair at the Defense Language Institute. He is also the stepdad of Nicole Martin (owner of Ma's Green Living) and the husband of Linda Hellyer (co-owner of Gypsea). On the morning of Tuesday, January 19, Phil suffered a major seizure. When he arrived at the hospital, doctors determined he had a brain mass that required surgery, which was conducted on January 21. Phil is now home and beginning the process of recovery.

Phil's Auto Repair is closed indefinitely, which puts a great financial strain on him and his wife, Linda, who is caring for him. With the loss of Phil’s income and the increasing medical expenses, meeting medical bills and day-to-day expenses is extremely daunting. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to make a contribution online, Nicole Martin has set up a GoFundMe account here.

Seeking Donations for a YWCA Makeover Project

Posted on January 20th, 2016 by lighthouseave

Carpets & Floors in the Lighthouse District is seeking donations for a YWCA makeover project! This is a picture of what the lobby of the YWCA’s domestic violence clinic offices looked like originally. Carpets and Floors has teamed up with Michelle Pheasant Designs to transform it, as the appearance of a room effects emotions and comfort levels, and it's important for scared children and mothers fleeing domestic violence to be reassured by a warm, welcoming space.

Using Carpets & Floors resources and engaging others in the design community to give, they've been able to get all of the necessary labor donated and most of the materials to do the makeover. However, they still need to purchase about $2,500 worth of goods. Carpets & Floors is going ahead with the project with the belief that more help will develop so they can completely remake the lobby. You can help them make a difference by giving a donation through Crowdrise. Crowdrise is a secure way to insure yourself that your funds go directly to making over the Y’s lobby. Just go to https://crowdrise.com/2015DFADMontereyCA. If you have questions, please email [email protected].

Congratulations to former Monterey County Supervisor Marc Del Piero, who was honored with a Reel Vision Award by the Lighthouse District's own Monterey County Film Commission in December 2015. When the idea of creating a Monterey County Film Commission was being considered by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors in 1987, it was then-Supervisor Marc Del Piero—along with Supervisor Sam Karas—who championed the cause. They hoped the county would benefit from the economic boost that on-location film production could bring to the area. Little did they know that by 2015 film productions would have meant more than $92 million in economic impact for Monterey County’s communities.

Pictured with Marc Del Piero is MCFC Board President Jeff Clark and MCFC Board Chair Gloria Gargiulo at the awards ceremony.
