Monterey Photo Contest 2017 Call for Entries

Posted on September 8th, 2017 by lighthouseave

The City of Monterey welcomes photo submissions in their first city-wide photo contest. Participants are encouraged to submit photos in any of the three categories:

1) environment - sky, beach, mountain, park and wildlife
2) architecture - urban design, cityscapes, landmarks and infrastructure
3) culture & community - people of all ages involved in sports, art activities and enjoying special events.

"We wish to showcase Monterey - the lifestyle, culture, diversity, history, natural resources and scenic beauty," said City Manager Mike McCarthy. "A photo contest is a fun way to bring attention to so many great parts of our City, and we are looking forward to all the entries."

All photos entered must be taken within Monterey city limits. Photos outside of the City of Monterey will be disqualified, as will low resolution images that cannot be reproduced clearly in printed materials.

There are two ways to win: 1) People’s Choice, decided by an online vote (open to all community members) and 2) Judges’ Choice, chosen by a panel of local photographers. Contestants will have their photos displayed at a special City Council presentation, where winners will be presented. All contest entries are eligible to be featured in citywide publications of print and electronic media with photo credit.

Anyone is qualified to enter. Entries must be received by December 31, 2017. Please visit the contest website for complete details and to enter.

Contestants and members of the public are invited to cast their votes online to select the "People's Choice" awards for the City of Monterey Photo Contest in January 2018.

Monterey Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) offers free training 2-4 times per year. You can register now for the upcoming series of classes starting in September! All classes are taught in Monterey Anyone may enroll by sending an e-mail of interest. You'll receive a confirmation with class location and further details.

This upcoming CERT training will occur Saturday, September 16, Saturday, September 23, and Sunday, September 24. Class time each day is 8:20am-4:30pm. Attendance at all three sessions is required to graduate from the class. Note: high school students can get 24 hours of community service credits for taking the class.

The CERT Program uses a FEMA curriculum to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist their families and others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT also participates in searches for missing persons, serves as coastal spotters for persons swept out to sea, storm response, and other emergencies.

In the classes, you'll learn emergency first-aid, use of a fire extinguisher, disaster preparedness, shutting down your utilities, rescue, communications when phones fail, and assessing your home or workplace after an earthquake or storm.
