Current Comics Trades & Hardcover Sale in September

Posted on September 16th, 2014 by lighthouseave

Current Comics (400 Lighthouse Ave) is pleased to announce that all trade paperbacks, hardcovers, and graphic novels are 20% off through the end of September 2014! Take advantage of this great deal while it lasts at your only local comic book shop.

Paper Wing Theatre prides itself on its Rocky Horror Show production, which has taken place nearly every Halloween for 10 years at our Lighthouse District theatre. Unfortunately, normal wear and tear on our 9-year-old headset-style microphones has taken its toll. We need your financial help to purchase a new set.

Rocky Horror is the biggest event we produce all year, and the income from this show makes it possible to produce all our other shows during the season. Paper Wing Theatre is an independent community theatre that relies on ticket sales to survive. Every dollar earned is put right back into our theatre to make certain we can keep entertaining the community.

Paper Wing makes it a priority to give back to our community. We employ local artists and designers. We participate in every neighborhood outreach program, including many of the fun events on Lighthouse Avenue. And we offer free theatre rental for smaller performing arts groups, free local playwright's play readings for the community, free entertainment to schools and institutions, and over $10,000 in free tickets to local non-profits, charities, and low-income families and individuals. Now we need your help.

You can support us online through our Indiegogo campaign. Or you can mail a check, payable to Paper Wing Theatre, to 320 Hoffman Avenue, Monterey, CA, 93940.

We thank you for your support!

Green Chalk Contemporary presents Kristin Casaletto: "Made in America"

Posted on August 18th, 2014 by lighthouseave

Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey's Lighthouse District is proud to present Made in America, an exhibition of work by Kristin Casaletto, open August 15 - September 15, 2014.

Kristin Casaletto, who regularly exhibits nationally and internationally, uses printmaking and other media to address human and social concerns, often touching on racism, issues of conscience, or other difficulties encountered in her daily life in the Deep South.

Casaletto’s art raises questions, rather than pushing one specific agenda. It encourages a deeper level of discourse than the one often encountered in our highly partisan, sound-bite-oriented contemporary culture.

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery, located at 616 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey, is open Tuesday - Saturday, 1pm-7pm and by appointment. For more information, please phone Ami-Sue Lawless at 831-601-0534.

Warning: Fire Inspection Scam in Monterey

Posted on July 4th, 2014 by lighthouseave

The Monterey County Fire Prevention Officers Association, together with the Monterey County Fire Chiefs Association, has issued a warning to alert business owners of a scam that includes mailed invoices from a fake fire inspection company.

At least one business in Monterey County was mailed an invoice this month from “RMZ Fire Safety” claiming payment $413.11 was due for fire inspection services that never occurred. RMZ Fire Safety’s mailing address on the invoice is in Walnut Creek, California.

The recipient reviewed the invoice and knew they had never received services from RMZ Fire Safety. Fortunately, the recipient had already been working with a local, licensed fire protection contractor, who informed them the invoice may be part of a scam. The local fire agency was called and notified of the false invoice.

The Monterey County Sheriff and District Attorney’s office have also been notified about the matter.

To avoid becoming victims of false-invoice scams, business owners should carefully review invoices before paying them to ensure the services have been received.

If anyone believes they have received a false invoice for fire inspection services, they can contact their local fire department’s fire prevention bureau, 831-596-4716.

The Lighthouse District's own Cat's Meow is playing a role in the West End Celebration's Imagine. Recreate. Fashion. Show and UpCycle Contest, and would like to announce a call for fashion designers!

The West End Celebration has long been known for art of every genre. This year, it will feature a spectacular fashion show entitled Imagine. Recreate. Fashion., focusing on sustainable fashion design, using pre-owned garments from Cat's Meow as the raw materials for expression.

The UpCycle Contest, taking place during the first half of the fashion show, will be an event at which each local contestant, selected from among a pool of applicants, will present fashions he or she has designed that are inspired by a specific Monterey peninsula artist using free materials from Cat's Meow. At the show, a panel of judges will select their favorites in each category, and the overall winner will be awarded one of twenty spots in the next Community Palette Annual Event.

If you are a fashion designer who would like to apply to participate, please click here for more information and to fill out the application form.
