Green Chalk Presents Alan Sonneman's "Exploring the Southern Sierra"

Posted on November 13th, 2015 by lighthouseave

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is pleased to present Exploring the Southern Sierra, a solo exhibition by Alan Sonneman, November 7 - January 10. Everyone is welcome to join us for a talk by the artist on Friday, December 11, 5pm-6pm.

Alan Sonneman, a long time California resident, has spent the past 17 summers in the high alpine regions of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains documenting many of the National Park’s most compelling scenic views. Moving slowly from place to place, using a camera to record his observations, Sonneman captures these direct experiences of time and place in both photographs and paintings.

Sonneman created this body of work with an awareness of its context to art history as well as to contemporary art. In their affinity with the massive scale of the physical world, these paintings bring to mind the work of Michael Heizer or James Turrell as much as Fredrick Church or Thomas Moran. But they also evoke a time when Romantic artists were not afraid to address the idea that art could be a transcendent experience. Sonneman is searching for something found in a moment of complete silence, a place where the scale of nature gives us a direct understanding of our own identity and our relationship to the world. This is the world as it is... its forces and its immense scale.

Recently, the Department of State Arts in Embassies Program acquired several of Sonneman’s paintings for the new U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan. Two of these works depict the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 1pm-5pm and by appointment. For more information, please phone Gail Enns at 831-718-7232.

Ma's Green Living: A Thank-You to Gypsea

Posted on November 12th, 2015 by lighthouseave

A message from Nicole Martin, owner of Ma's Green Living:

As you may or may not know, I now have retail roommates at Ma's Green Living. As I announced a couple months back, Gypsea opened a pop-up shop in my store. Gypsea consists of my mom, Linda Martin-Hellyer, and her best friend, Paula Watson.

I had been working on ways to keep my lovely shop open to our local community to keep being able to provide the service of teaching and offering supplies to support our community in living a life with less impact on the environment. Unfortunately, the store was not supporting itself and I was going to have to close my doors this month, but luckily Gypsea came along at the right moment to join our forces together.

Now because of Gypsea I get to keep my doors open and get to offer more even cooler products and events at my store! Gypsea brings a new flavor to the store and has enhanced our positive energy and vibe. At first look it may seem like they may be an opposing force sharing the store, but as you gaze upon their gorgeous items you will see that they fit in perfectly.

Gypsea is a combination of Paula's vintage items and original Tarot art, as well as Linda's handmade wigs, hats, fascinators, and crystal ball photography. Linda also hosts guided group meditations and does Egyptian Stone readings, while Paula offers Tarot readings.

Please make them feel welcome as they are the reason Ma's Green Living is still here. Also thank you for all your continued support for what will be 3 years in business in January!

Lighthouse Tunnel Closure: Nights of November 16 and 17, 2015

Posted on November 12th, 2015 by lighthouseave

UPDATE: The Lighthouse Tunnel will not be closed on the night of November 17. The work was completed more quickly than expected.

The Lighthouse Tunnel will close in both directions overnight on Monday and Tuesday, November 16 and 17, 2015 from approximately 8pm to 7am. The northbound lanes of the tunnel (towards Pacific Grove) will close at 8pm, followed by closure of the southbound lanes. Northbound lanes will re-open by 7am, with southbound lanes re-opening by 8am.

This is part of the City of Monterey’s removal of the fountain at Custom House Plaza (being done under an agreement with California State Parks, which owns the Plaza). Work on the plaza will continue through mid-December. Custom House Plaza will remain open to the public during the fountain removal with full access to the waterfront and Fisherman’s Wharf.

The City will take advantage of the tunnel closure to complete another project at Lighthouse curve including repairs to two manholes, part of a sewer rehabilitation project.

The show must go on! On the afternoon of October 18, Hot Roux played Bon Ton L'Roy's Lightouse Smokehouse in Monterey. The only problem was that the whole town was without power. No electricity! KPIG radio was on site doing a promotion and they happened to have a "hand held" megaphone. The band borrowed the megaphone, strapped it to a mic stand, and proceeded to play totally unplugged. That's old school blues! A good time was had by all.

(Thanks to Hot Roux's Facebook page for this great story! Click the link to watch the video.)
