Many people who come to the Lighthouse District will make the hop on down to the shore in Pacific Grove to see the Harbor Seals. They're wonderful creatures and it sure is tempting to want to get close, but remember to heed the advice of the The Harbor Seals of Pacific Grove Facebook page. The seals are protected wildlife and must be left alone.

This means no drones. Do not fly drones to get a better view of the harbor seals. If you get busted, the fines are very very steep.

Green Chalk Contemporary Presents Seiko Perdue's "Press and Twist"

Posted on September 7th, 2015 by lighthouseave

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is pleased to present Press and Twist, a monumental solo exhibition by Seiko Atsuta Purdue, September 12 - October 31, 2015. Widely shown in the United States, Canada, and Japan, this show marks Seiko’s California debut. Everyone is invited to join us for a reception on Saturday, October 3, 5pm-8pm!

Since moving to the United States, Seiko has been exploring the connections between Japanese and American culture. Challenging notions of beauty and power, her work uses Japanese craft processes to explore the world at large. By substituting traditional materials for contemporary symbols of destruction, innocence, and violence, it poses powerful questions about the implications of global culture.

Press and Twist includes the installation Berry Grove, which uses a contemporary shibori (Japanese tie-dyeing) process and handmade paper pieces created in Fukui, Japan during her recent residency. It also includes her Bullet Cloth series, which is highly influenced by everyday gun incidents in the US. In Japan, it is rare for people to own firearms, so the fact that she is able to own guns and bullets in the US came as a shocking cultural difference.

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 1pm-5pm and by appointment. For more information, please phone Gail Enns at 831-718-7232.
