Posted on July 13th, 2015 by lighthouseave

Monterey Bay Aquarium invites you to join us for Evenings by the Bay! Our extended summer hours - until 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays - allow you to see the Aquarium in a whole new light.

Stroll our galleries with fewer people as you enjoy a glass of wine and listen to a variety of musical performances on Saturdays and live jazz from Monterey Jazz Festival musicians on Sundays.

In addition, enjoy sustainable bites in our Cafe, including brick-oven pizzas, fresh-tossed salads and desserts. All of our dishes feature the freshest, local ingredients sourced from Monterey Bay and the Central Valley.

For a complete entertainment schedule and a list of other featured guests each evening (such as wineries), please visit the Evenings by the Bay webpage.

Military Dental Coverage

Posted on July 13th, 2015 by smilebeautiful

At Lighthouse Family Dentistry, we are proud to serve many military families stationed at the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute. If you are a military spouse or dependent looking for a dentist that accepts military benefits and insurance, you are welcome to come in and see us at Lighthouse Family Dentistry.

Most of the military families are covered with Metlife. Active military have their own dental care providers, so we rarely see them. However, Metlife is issued for the spouse and/or dependents, and we see them frequently in our office. As a general rule all should have their check-ups, etc. with branches of the service; they are required to show that they are “caries free” prior to foreign travel.

Some of the dental services that military families can utilize include: dental exams, teeth cleaning, fillings, crowns, and more, depending on insurance coverage.

To get started with a dental exam, contact Lighthouse Family Dentistry for an appointment. Lighthouse Family Dentistry is conveniently located near the Private Bolio gate of DLI at 251 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey. Contact us at [email protected] or (831) 373-0478.

Street Work Around New Monterey, June 10-19, 2015

Posted on May 28th, 2015 by lighthouseave

Street maintenance and repairs, funded by the Measure P one-cent increase in the sales tax, are underway in the City of Monterey. June 10-19, slurry seal will be applied to streets in the neighborhoods and will impact some major roads including: David Avenue from Divisadero to Grace, Prescott Street from Divisadero to Taylor, Foam Street from Lighthouse to Cannery Row, and Munras from Soledad to Alameda.

A slurry seal is a thin maintenance treatment consisting of a mixture of asphalt emulsions, graded aggregates, mineral fillers, water and other additives. All street work is dependent on weather conditions and temperatures, and schedules may shift as a result.

Anyone living, working or commuting in an area scheduled for street improvements may be affected in the following ways: on-street parking may be restricted; streets may be closed and detours may be in place; sidewalks at intersections may be closed; and road work in a neighborhood could stop between the first phase of spot repairs to distressed streets and the second phase of slurry/paving work.

Was Green Chalk Contemporary once an alley? Located between a restaurant and a dive shop, it is only 12 ft. wide but 65 ft. long with pipes hanging along brick walls. A 1929 picture shows that while it was not an "official" alley, Green Chalk was once a walk-through between Lighthouse Avenue and the old lumber yard near Cannery Row.

May 2 - May 31, the highly imaginative artist Laurel Farrin will transform Green Chalk into The Back Alley. For this provocative exhibit, Ms. Farrin will use assemblages of paint, cardboard, and debris typically found in any alley. All are welcome to the opening reception on Saturday, May 2, 5pm-8pm.

Ms. Farrin says, “This show is about what’s in an alley - where stuff goes that no longer fits or doesn’t fit together - the leftovers, the forgotten, the unwanted, the discards. The back alley is where broken things are left, where weeds grow. The back alley is where kids play. The back alley is where we go to to hide, to abandon and sometimes to find and rescue rare treasures.”

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 1:30pm-6pm and by appointment. For more information, please phone Gail Enns at 831-718-7232.

Oya Esthetic Room Offers Mink Lashes

Posted on April 4th, 2015 by lighthouseave

Do you want beautiful, “look at me” lashes? Do you want to skip on mascara? Oya Salon’s Esthetic Room is now offering both Mink Lashes and Faux Mink Lashes!

Lash extensions are applied directly to your natural lashes, individually. The look can vary from natural to very full and dramatic depending on your desired look. When lashes are properly cared for, fills should be done every 3-4 weeks. Lashes can last up to 3 months, which is the full period of your natural hair growth cycle. The bond that is used is waterproof and medical grade adhesive, so you can resume with your daily activities immediately after application.

In April, Oya is offering Faux Mink Lashes for only $190 and Mink Lashes for $240. Book your lash appointment with Emily, Oya's Esthetician and Certified Lash Technician, at 831-656-0570. All consultations are complimentary.
