As you probably know, small businesses are really suffering during this coronavirus shutdown. Even in the best of times, running a small business is a challenge. The margins are small and the hours are long. It's not the easiest way to make a living. You do it because it's just who you are and you can't imagine life as anything other than being the owner of a shop or a restaurant.
If you're one of the lucky people whose life hasn't been entirely flipped upside down by the Covid-19 outbreak, please consider supporting our temporarily shuttered businesses with the purchase of a gift certificate that you can use when they're able to open their doors again. Look for the "Gift Certificates" button in each business profile.
Don't see your favorite business listed in our Gift Card Directory? Contact them and ask. They'll be glad to hear from you.
Are your kids climbing the walls during this shelter-in-place order? Let them burn off some of that boundless energy! Log into Zoom on Wednesday, April 8, at 12pm and turn them over to Coach Masha of Boxing Strong, who will lead them in a free boxing class conducted live. Check out the details here on Instagram or here on Facebook.
Masha Cavazos is a former competitive fighter and the 2017 NCBA West Coast Champion (139-lb fight class) and the 2015 Silver Medalist (132-lb fight class); she is a USA Boxing-Certified Coach and a National Association for Fitness Certification (NAFC) Certified Personal Trainer.
She is the founder and owner of Boxing Strong, based in New Monterey, and she brings her boxing and training experience to her diverse range of clients with their various fitness and athletic goals. She is also the proud mom of a teenager.
The novel coronavirus has taken a very serious and unexpected toll on our community. While families struggle to adapt and prepare for what may lie ahead, Troia Foods, a dairy and fine food distributor based in New Monterey, sensed a need to shift our distribution focus to supporting our neighbors directly.
We want to be a reliable outlet for the most important, essential household needs we can supply reliably, affordably, and efficiently to the people of Monterey and surrounding areas. To that end, Troia Foods will begin accepting small, consumer orders to support the most essential household needs for dairy, pantry, and household items. As always, quality and freshness will be paramount.
Each week we will have a Pantry Essentials Kit available for pick up. Products may vary from week to week - you can view the contents of each week's bag on our website. Please place your order online here and select your pick up time at checkout. All orders must be prepaid. The pick up location is 801 Foam Street in Monterey. When picking up, please give us your confirmation number and last name. Then just pop open your trunk and we will place the bag inside.
In compliance with CDC regulations, we are using gloves and masks to handle and bag the products for each kit. If you have any questions, please feel free to send us a message.

We carry full spectrum CBD and hemp-derived products for you and your dog or cat including lotions, creams, tinctures, and edibles (including dog treats). We also carry our own line of CBD flower and CBD pre-rolls.

In the Lighthouse District, a number of restaurants are switching from being dine-in restaurants to take-out and food delivery services. After being quarantined, you're probably starting to yearn for a taste of your former life, but you may hesitate because you're not sure if it's safe to do so.
Is it safe to eat take-out food during the Covid-19 pandemic?
While it's up to you to make the final call on this, we quote some reputable sources in saying that take-out food and food delivery is safe to consume. The Covid-19 virus is a respiratory virus that's predominantly transmitted through inhaling respiratory droplets emitted by infected individuals. The chance of transmission through food is unlikely and there have been no known incidences of Covid-19 transmission from eating food. There have also been no known incidences of SARS (close cousin of Covid-19) transmission through food.
The food itself may be a low risk, but encountering other people on your way to receiving your food is not a low risk so please be mindful of how much distance you are giving other people including the people who are working to get you your orders. Remember, we're not just concerned for your safety, we're also concerned about ours as well. Please stay six feet away and absolutely do not leave your home if you are sick.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Monterey is offering online classes for adults and kids during Monterey County's shelter-in-place order. To learn more, please visit Gracie's website or e-mail them.

If you miss training, want the one-on-one watchful eye of a coach, or just need a distraction from the quarantine, Coach Masha of Boxing Strong invites you to explore online training!
Masha is now offering 30 minutes of private training via FaceTime, Facebook, or Skype for only $30. Book your training session online. This offer is only good during Monterey County's shelter-in-place order.
Masha has also started hosting 5-minute daily workouts for different body parts. Sometimes you may not have energy, willpower or time, but we KNOW you all have 5 minutes. She'll make it short and sweet (or bittersweet). Join Masha on Instagram Stories Live daily. She'll announce the time and body part(s) one day in advance. Just follow @boxingstrongmonterey.
Boxing Strong, now online, is usually located at 191 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey. Questions? E-mail Coach Masha or phone 831-200-3392.
The Lighthouse District's own little neighborhood grocery store, International Market and Deli, is now open during Monterey County's shelter-in-place order, offering a selection of food and other essentials. They have a remarkable stock of nonperishable items, including dry beans, grains, rice, and canned goods...and they occasionally have toilet paper. They also carry breads, cheese, meat, snacks, sweets, and more. View a list of items on their website.
International Market owners Gloria and Adil are committed to serving the New Monterey community during this difficult time. They bring in new supplies almost every day, and are offering free home delivery to seniors, families with children, and those with disabilities.
You're welcome to drop in, but because the market is small, they also offer curbside shopping to minimize contact between customers. Just call or e-mail your grocery order so they can prepare your bags in advance and arrange for a pickup time. You can pay by credit card at the curb or on the sidewalk using the market's portable credit card device.
International Market and Deli is located at 580 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey and is open Monday - Saturday, 10am-7pm, and Sunday, 11am-4pm. You can contact them via e-mail or by phone at 831-375-9451.
Just because there's a pandemic happening doesn't mean you can't eat well. Many of the Lighthouse District's fantastic restaurants are open exclusively for take-out and delivery orders. To help you find which restaurants are still running, we've set up the Lighthouse District Shelter-in-Place Dining Guide, which lists restaurants offering pick-up or delivery during Monterey County's shelter-in-place order.
At our Dining Guide, you'll also find operating hours, menus, contact information, and links to delivery services. Please note that most restaurants are open limited hours and those may change without notice.
Please remember to respect the safety of everyone who's working on Lighthouse to allow you to Shelter in Style. Follow the directions of the restaurant crews on how to pay and get your food. Maintain the recommended six feet of distance from them and other customers at all times, and if you are sick absolutely do not leave your home. (Many delivery services now offer no-contact home delivery, which is great if you're not feeling well.)
Thank you for your understanding. Please stay healthy, support local businesses if you can, and enjoy some of Lighthouse's amazing comfort food, perfect for lifting the spirit.

The following is an excerpt from a "Shelter in Place FAQ" document published by Monterey County's Health Department on March 17, 2020. Click here to read the full document.
What to do
Effective midnight, Wednesday, March 18, 2020, the Health Officer of Monterey County is requiring people to stay home except for essential needs. The intent of this order is to ensure the maximum number of people self-isolate in their places of residence to the maximum extent feasible.
Vulnerable populations including the elderly and those with underlying health conditions must stay home. All community members should stay home except to perform essential duties for business continuity or government functions, to get food, care for a relative or friend, get necessary health care, or perform activities related to maintaining a healthy lifestyle during this time.
It is OK to go outside for walks if you are not in a group and practice proper social distancing.
This order is in effect until Midnight, April 8, 2020. It may be extended depending on recommendations from public health officials.
Why are we doing this?
This is a critical intervention to reduce harm from the spread of the coronavirus in our community. This is a mandatory order enforceable by a fine or jail.
Now is the time to do everything we can to prevent the situation from getting much worse in a matter of days or weeks. Every hour counts. We need and appreciate the cooperation of everyone who lives and works in Monterey County to act immediately.
While this news may feel alarming, it is a necessary step to prevent a worsening situation. The patterns of the virus around the world, and in our own state, tell us that moving right now to maximize social distancing and restrict people gathering is the best way to fight the virus and save lives.

As reported by Monterey County Weekly journalist Mary Duan on Twitter:
As of 12:01am on March 18, 2020, Monterey County residents are ordered to shelter at place of residence except to receive or provide essential services or work for essential services. All government non-essential operations are to cease. All gatherings and non essential travel to cease.
Data shows rate of increase is exponential and although only two cases, if we don’t act now we can see ourselves in same situation as Santa Clara County. Order effective until 11:59pm on April 7.
Certain services will remain open, including police and fire, hospitals, jails, garbage, utilities, gas stations, groceries, food banks, take out and delivery restaurants. No dinner parties, no friends over, no manicures or pedicures, no shopping, no taking trips on public transit unless necessary. This order is enforceable by local law enforcement.
Patients should not delay seeking necessary healthcare. The order allows for online delivery services like from grocery stores. Taxis can be used and ride share can be used all only for essential services.
Grocery stores will remain open so people can travel to purchase necessary items. Some people want to know if they can leave homes to provide care to fam or loved ones, answer is yes. But please stay out of hospitals and skilled nursing centers. Each facility has to determine its own visitor policies.
The order allows people to leave homes to take a walk, walk the dog, jog or hike. Moreno’s order will be posted online this afternoon.
This is a move to decrease spread and decrease cases, Moreno says. Implementing these orders is not going to prevent further cases, but by locking down now, we can spread out the number of cases over a longer time and if we can do that, it will reduce overload on hospitals and healthcare providers. No large surge of patients because of it.
Monterey County Weekly and their journalists are doing a fantastic job of covering developments regarding COVID-19 in Monterey County. Please visit their website and consider contributing to support their work.
We at Pearl Hour have been monitoring the news and, as of March 15, have made the decision to remain open at 5pm everyday with the following adjustments to our house:
* limit our capacity to 50 guests
* postpone all live shows until further notice
* our employees will continue to follow all sanitary procedures and our cleaning regimen will continue as it always has (sanitizing all surfaces!)
We will monitor the state and county regulations and adjust if necessary. If we are mandated to shut down, we will do so, and during that time our staff will begin work on renovating the back bar and gardens for the outdoor patio so we can serve you better. It is our life mission to provide a beautiful gathering space for this community.
Pearl Hour is located at 214 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey.
Chic Event Rentals (486 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey) wanted to provide you with an update on how we are responding to the novel coronavirus and COVID-19. As always, the health and safety of our clients and employees is at the top of our priorities.
With that said, we will be following the CDC’s guidelines on how to keep a healthy workplace for both our employees and clients. This includes, but is not limited to, providing hand sanitizer on our trucks, disposable gloves for our staff handling rented items and trash, and asking sick employees to stay home. We will also be taking the proper steps in keeping our showrooms clean by constantly sanitizing high touch areas.
In addition, we wanted to provide you with information regarding our cancellation policy. This week, the governor suggested all large gatherings be canceled and this caused many events to cancel very last minute. Since this is something that impacted our local community and partners very quickly, we wanted to help all we could and allowed cancellations that went against our company’s current policy.
Moving forward, we will be implementing our cancellation policy with a slight change. Now until April 30, 2020, we will allow any paid deposits to be transferred to any event taking place this year.
See the following for our cancellation policy:
**Canceling within 3 days of delivery or will call pick up - customer will be responsible 100% of the total rental.
**Canceling within 3-6 days of delivery or will call pick up - customer will be responsible 75% of the total rental.
**Canceling within 7+ days of delivery or will call pick up - customer will be responsible 50% of the total rental.
Update on March 17, 2020: because of Monterey County's shelter in place order to stem the tide of COVID-19, BookBuyers will be closed until April 8.
